Cambodia builds $40,000 toilet for visit of Thai princess

The remaining building will now be converted into an office for local officials. The toilet block specially built for Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's trip to Ratanakiri   Photo: Aisha Kehoe Down Ven Churk, head of the Yeak Lom Lake committee, said: “They asked if I wanted an air conditioner in the bathroom and I said, sure, put an air conditioner in the bathroom. “Maybe in the future, if I raise funds, I will expand it so my other staff can work in there.” The princess was visiting Ratanakiri to open a health centre donated by the Thai royal family, according to local media reports. The health centre cost more than $250,000 and was built last year. Pak Son, the district governor, told the Cambodia Daily: “Now, the people who live near the health centre can enjoy easy access to health services.” The lavatory arrangement has sparked controversy in a country where a third of schools have no sanitation whatsoever, according to the latest data from the Cambodian Ministry of Education. Critics point out that the cost of the outhouse could have paid for 160 individual school toilets. There has been no official response from the Princess or her supporters regarding the criticism.
